The Galaxy Zoo scientists who came to this conclusion realized that we could study the process of AGN Shutdown by finding and examining other galaxies with extended emission (typically from hydrogen and ionized oxygen). Because of that, Hanny's Voorwerp is affected by what goes on in IC 2497, in particular by the behavior of the giant black hole at its center. In fact, the green blob gets its color because oxygen atoms in the gas cloud have been excited by the incoming ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from regions close to the black hole. IC 2497 -- Radio Galaxy The astronomical object called IC 2497 is a Radio Galaxy: Origin of the objects types : (Ref) Object type as listed in the reference "Ref" An interaction between IC 2497 and another galaxy about a billion years ago may have created Hanny's Voorwerp and fueled the quasar. The Hubble image shows that IC 2497 has been disturbed, with complex dust patches, warped spiral arms, and regions of star formation around its core. These features suggest the aftermath of a galaxy merger.

2009-05-12 · We present multi-wavelength radio observations in the direction of the spiral galaxy IC 2497 and the neighbouring emission nebula known as "Hanny's Voorwerp".
