Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is sometimes regarded as one of the most important individuals involved with the abolitionist movement. He used his power as President to see that he could do whatever he could to end slavery in America.

Lincoln began his public career by claiming that he was "antislavery" -- against slavery's expansion, but not calling for immediate emancipation. Abraham Lincoln did believe that slavery was morally wrong, but there was one big problem: It was sanctioned by the highest law in the land, the Constitution. Abraham Lincoln ran for the 1860 presidential elections on the Republican platform under which slavery would remain legal in the states where it was already established but would limit its expansion. He was not an abolitionist as many in his party were and was considered a moderate within his own party.
