Today I wanted to show you the difference between two commonly found type’s of Whelk Shells…the Channel Whelk and a Knobby Whelk. Whelk shells are often mistakenly called conch shells, but there are many differences in the two shell types. Good rule of thumb would be that whelks are found in temperate water and conchs are found in more tropical waters. Sinistrofulgur perversum, the lightning whelk, is an edible species of very large predatory sea snail or whelk, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Busyconidae, the busycon whelks. Go down south to Florida and the Keys on the other hand, and conchs abound. A good rule of thumb is that conchs tend to be tropical, and whelks temperate in climate. If followed closely, the number of false positives (the identification of whelks as conchs) will be nil.
